Hi Karen,
Is there a chance that you mean the ship SS Normandie, with a 'ie' instead of a 'y'? The SS Normandie was a French built ocean liner, but she never was never fully converted to a troop transport, and capsized in New York Harbor in 1942. This is the only ship I could find with a name similar to Normandy, but the Normandie could only carry just under 2,000. Is there a chance your Great Uncle meant 2,000, not 20,000?
