I handle the World War I U-boat fate information for this website. I also work closely with divers to identify WWI submarine wrecks and am (slowly) working on a book on WWI U-boat losses.

When assessing a sinking attribution, there are a couple of things to consider. Does the story make sense? Can I reasonably place the U-boat where and when the attacked happened? Does the sinking claim require an excessively long patrol length for the U-boat? How strong is the sinking claim? Are there any unexplained sinkings or attacks by U-boats after the U-boat sinking claim?

Beyond that, I try to reattrange the puzzle pieces to see if you can find a way for everything to fit better. Also —and this may seem obvious but it often hasn't been done — is that you look at the best available source material (KTBs, logs, etc.) to get the truest possible picture of what happened.

Some U-boat loss reassessments that I've done: on U 85 and UC 68: [uboat.net]

UC 36 and UB 36: [uboat.net]

Best wishes,
Michael
