Fate of U865 Stellmacher

I am at a loss on the fate of this boat U-865 Oblt. Dietrich Stellmacher, On Clay Blair's book, "Hitler's U-boat War vol.2" page 645 Has a very detailed sinking of this boat by a B-24 bomber from squadron 206 which aircrew reported about 20 men in the water. If this was not U-865 which boat was it? If it was later withdrawn by the Admiralty then was this a bogus report? Just trying to wrap my brain around if this pilot really did in fact sink a sub and what happened to these men in the water?
