Would mention of the early incidents of U-Boat chivalry be appropriate for your effort? My personal favorite - I am biased of course - is the Diamantis incident (www.U-35.com/Diamantis) and its consequences. Lott was certainly not anticipating anything like the events that unfolded, but he was forced into an extremely difficult decision by the recklessness of the Greek sailors. The international attention (e.g., LIFE Magazine cover in USA) was quite welcome to Germany and embarrassing to Britain. Upon return to Germany, Lott was severely reprimanded by Doenitz for endangering his own boat and crew. This ensured that such a rescue would never happen again, and it probably accelerated the race toward unrestricted submarine warfare. Mountbatten thanked Lott decades later for the magnanimous behavior, and the event is now celebrated in Ireland and Greece.
Best regards, Hans
