Agreed, no doubt U-564 (Suhren) sank Ohioan for the points you made plus the matches to survivor statements.

But since the engagement was so brief (Ohioan sank in less than two minutes, before Suhren could even conduct his periscope sweep) and neither side was able to identify each other at the time, someone else would have had to connect the dots later.

Do we know if the identification happened during the war or during post war assesments, and if so, when?

It wasn't noted on the Allied reports done in May/June of 1942, nor the newer style Master's War Action Casualty Report dated July 1944. It was known by the time Rohwer's work was published in 1968 and before Suhren's death, but I'm looking for a more specific timeframe, and best case, I'd like to know whether Suhren ever knew and if he ever commented on it.
