uboats in ice

I am a newbie at this submarine stuff, but intrigued already.
I have heard obliquely of uboats having to escape ice packs by diving under it in the far north and coming up for air and to charge batteries. I am curious about what the ice capability would be for a type 1X boat with respect to icing and maintaining temperatures inside the boat, surfacing through a foot or two of ice (impacts on conning tower, periscope, snorkel, deck guns, etc). How would it be known that the boat was under ice? Would it be feasible to strengthen the nose and hull of a type 1X boat to render it more suitable for operating on the surface where there is some prevalence of new or pack ice? Abd for modifications to the upper surfaces in the event of having to surface through a foot or two of ice?

Cheers
Larry
