Hello Everyone.
Whilst reading a recent book on U-boats their were a lot of known and unknown \\\"trivia\\\" items which I thought might make a good quiz on the Forum, no prizes for getting the correct items but lets see how many people can get them right?
1) In May/June 1942, tests were carried out firing 30cm rockets from wooden frames mounted on the upper deck of which U-boat?...Answer -
The answer was U-511.
2) What was the official name of the rockets used?...Answer -
The answer was Wurfkorper 42 Spreng, (Rocket, Model 42).
3) What was the purpose of the helical rods that were wrapped around the periscope housing?...Answer -
The answer was that the helical rods were intended to change the natural frequency of the conical element of the tube to avoid resonance with the natural frequency of the eddies! in other words to break up the water-flow into general turbulence.
4) As a Sonar Decoy what was the purpose of \\\"Siegmund\\\"?... Answer -
The answer was, Siegmund emitted a series of explosions, which were intended to \'black-ot\' the enemy\'s listening devices, providing short-term protection while the U-boat moved at high speed to evade an attack.
5) What was the two official names given to the radar decoys used by U-boats?...Answer -
The answer is, Aphrodite and Thetis.
6) What U-boat sailed around Australia in December1944/January 1945?...Answer -
The answer is U-852 (Timm).
7) Where was the main German Far East Base located?...Answer -
The answer is Penang on the west coast of the Malayan peninsula. The first U-boat enered the port in july 1943.
8) What was the name of the only U-boat CO? who was charged with \\\'cowardice in the face o....
The answer was Kapitanleutnant Hirsaker, CO of U-572who was court-martialed, sentenced to death and shot on April 24 1943.
