question about Radio direction finders of German U-boats

Hi every one.I have a question about Radio direction finders of U boats.does the operator have to spin the handle of it anytime to find the electromagnetic waves? but it's not mentioned in any datas ,so I want someone can tell me the truth,thanks .

U Boats are unrivaled.
