On a second trip from Casablanca to Veracruz( Mexico) , in May 1942, near Bermudas, the portuguese ship Nyassa, with republican spanish refugees aboard, was stopped by allied ships because a german submarine seemed to be navigating hiddent under the ship.
The submarine was attacked with deep charges and according to different travellers on Nyassa it was destroyed but the description ( oil appearing on the surface of the sea ) they give do not correspond to what could be expected from the destruction and sinking of a submarine, which I presume should be more spectacular. Therefore I have always thought that the submarine was not sunk.
I do not know the exact date of the event but it was some days before the ship arrived to Veracruz ( May 1942).
Could anyone obtain some information about that event ?
