Vito,
It was a long time ago and, while I think I have the details correct, my memory may be at fault.
Name: Helmut Hiller (spelling?)
Trade: Radio (or possibly electrical)
U-boat: Unknown
Captured (or surrendered): Paris
Incarceration: Canada and then Wales (via Liverpool)
He told me that they were on their way back to base when spotted by a patrolling aircraft. The boat broke-up after the attack and he was one of the few survivors. He was upset that the crew of the attacking aircraft then machined-gunned them in the water. Subsequently they were rescued by their own people so I expect that they were close in-shore. I assume that this was towards the end of WWII as his place of capture was consistent with him being on leave close to the end of the conflict.
It was interesting to see that you were with GE. I left Philips in 1965 to go out to Africa in radio communications. Prior to that I had specialised in Image intensifiers for screening purposes.
Cheers - Joe
