Totenkopf insignia

<HTML>One of the pictures in Stern\'s Type VII U Boats depicts a returning U boat man, displaying a metal SS Totenkopf cap badge on the side of his Bordmutze. Does anyone know whether this was adopted by the crew as the boats insignia (Kampfgeschwader 54 displayed a similar one on their Ju 88s) or just an individual affectation.</HTML>
