GOODWIN was a steam merchant of 1928 tons completed in May 1917 by Caledon Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd, Dundee for Clyde Shipping Co Ltd, Glasgow. Upon completion requisitioned by the Admiralty and used as Q-ship armed with three 4in guns under the names BALLANTRAE, MODERLEY and UNDERWING. In May 1919 returned to owners, but requisitioned again in September 1939 and used as armed boarding vessel and later as auxiliary anti-aircraft vessel. Converted to a convoy rescue ship from December 1942 to April 1943 and then made 15 voyages, rescuing 133 survivors. After the war returned to civil use and eventually scrapped in 1955.
