Searching for Dads records

Hi All...Searching for years for info on our Dad in the Merchant Navy during WW11. So far been unable to find any of his records (and boy have we searched).
His name was Kenneth Santanna/Macaulay ( Santanna birth name but reverted to Mothers maiden name of Macaulay...so could be under either).DOB 15th April 1920.
What we know...he was torpedoed three times and after the third time left the Merchant Navy <1943>. Suffered burns in one sinking. Was thrown overboard by a man who went down with the ship. Was rescued in lifeboat by inhabitants of an island.
Unfortunately we do not have, or been able to locate his records so we have no idea of the ships he was on.
Any leads of how we can find/access his records would be gratefully received...so far none of the usual sources have been even slightly helpful.
