Hi Adam

Do you have additional information, like aircraft type, time of the attack or number of bombs dropped?

The Luftwaffe grid "5216/27 Ost" is approx. 71°52'30N/25°25E, about 45 nautical miles north of the North Cape.

I'm only aware of the British submarine HMS TRIDENT and the Soviet submarine K-2 that were on patrol off Northern Norway on that day, but it is unlikely that one of them was the target of this attack because both were much further east than the reported position.

However, U-451 had left Kirkenes on 16 September 1941 to return to Germany for an overhaul and reported crash diving for an aircraft at 1114 on 17 September in grid AC4894. One bomb being dropped, no damage. This took place in approx. 71°51N/25°10E, which is less than 5 nautical miles from the position of the reported air attack.

Best regards
Rainer
