Machine-gunning of U-boat survivirs

I am asking about machine-gunning of U-boat survivors by US Navy warships in the North Atlantic, particularly around the time of the Allied supply convoys to Russia early in the war.

I have been told by a family member whose father was a crew member aboard USS Washington, BB56, that when assigned to a machine gun aboard that ship he fired upon and killed German sailors who survived the sinking of their U-boat. No other details were ever given that I am aware of except the claim that this American sailor is certain he killed a lot of German sailors.

I have my own opinion of the validity of this claim, and should say up front that I have been a student of history with a special interest in World War II and all aspects of the naval war. I've read countless accounts and books relating to U-boats in particular and have never found anything to substantiate a claim that US Navy ship crews ever shot up U-boat survivors, nor have I ever found any such claims by crewmen aboard Allied armed merchantmen.

So, what is the truth?
