Hi Firmin,

U-518 was a Type IXC and the only one left is U-505 at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry in the U.S.

U-534 is a Type IXC/40 and is almost identical to the IXC. It was raised from the Kattegat, between Denmark and Sweden, in 1993. She was taken to Birkenhead, England in May 1996 and is now part of a small museum run by Merseytravel, the local transport executive.

Those are your only two choices. U-995 is in Germany but it is a Type VIIC/41.

Werner von Janowski was landed at Grid BB 4141 roughly between 48°00'00"N, 065°30'00"W and 48°00'00"N, 065°20'00"W.

According to Showell in:

Showell, Jak P. Mallmann. U-Boats at War Landings on Hostile Shores. Shepperton: Ian Allan Publishing Ltd., 2000. ISBN: 1-55750-864-X. Copyright: Jak P. Mallmann Showell, 2000.

The agent U518 was to carry, Werner von Janowski, was a happy-go-lucky type of character. In many ways he appeared to be an ideal candidate for clandestine operations. He had married in Canada before the war and lived there at his wife's expense while he trained for a variety of different jobs before returning to Europe and joining the French Foreign Legion. Later, this landed him in trouble with the police in Berlin, who considered the move to have been subversive. As a result he was unable to do very much once he returned to Germany and was even excluded from joining the armed forces. However, von Janowski eventually found a place in a special sabotage group, with which he proved himself by undertaking a number of difficult missions. By the time he made his way to Kiel for transportation to Canada, he had certainly shown the right temperament and training for the tasks ahead of him.

Regards,

Ken Dunn
