U-boats lost to unknown cause.

What method are use when determining to get a specific date to a unknown loss? Currently researching U22 which sailed on March 20th 1940, of the seven sources I have used there are five different date periods listed, the range including March 20th, 23rd, 27th, then going into to April 23rd and 25th. The later two being much earlier publications which I suppose are after of what was her due return date. The loss area is given as mainly in the Skagerrak, but also the North Sea. She sent no signals back and I presume therefore no record exists of her receiving any from BdU. May be her wreck will be found and thus the cause of her demise, the date however will remain unknown. john
