Dear John,

Grid area "AO30" does not - as such - exist on a German grid map, no, but it is a common practice to document where a Uboat was approximately, when a full grid reference (bigram + 4 digits) was unknown.
"AO3" and "AO30" mean the same: somwhere in one of the squares AO31 till AO39.

When you go through BdU's KTB (for instance online at [www.uboatarchive.net] ) you will notice BdU regularly uses the same annotation.
