Hi undercurrents,
To answer your first question, I would have to say no, they did not go ashore looking for water.Before each patrol, they would top off their water tanks and use the water very sparingly. Water for the batteries took prority and than drinking and cooking. I would say the boat tried to top off the water tanks each day if they could.
To answer your second question, It depends on what type of class u-boat you are talking about. Could be anywhere from 44-52 to 48-63 depending on the mission. Again, what type of boat are we talking about?
Maybe someone else can shade some light on your questions.
