Hello,
I already asked this question on this forum in November 2008 (German mercury for Japan).
“ Vidar” answered me :

My reaction on his quote : Thanks Vidar for this info. I imagine that only with the 67 tons of metallic mercury carried by U-864 for instance, the Japanese could manufacture lots of (tons of) percussion caps and (primers) in cartridges for the next 20 years.
