A WWII navy terminology a \"VS\" squadron was a carrier-based scouting squadron. During the war, however, the \"carrier based\" really meant \"capable of being carrier based\" as lots of these squardons served without actually operating off carriers. VS squadrons operated SBD dauntlesses and SB2C Helldivers. I have the Osprey book on the Dauntless and VS-44 is not listed, so I presume it would have been a Helldiver squadron.
