hi Ken,

I seem to recall that it is mentioned in Herbert Werner`s memoir [www.goodreads.com] in the chapter when he is still a midshipman (Fähnrich zur See) in 1941.
That is, however, not a proof and I don`t have any further reliable data on its introduction in the u-boat service
