Obersteuermann Training Question

(I posted this in the WWI section, but am also posting here in case there may be a similarity with WWII.)

Hi,

I have been trying to find training background info. for the Obersteuermann rank on WWI U Boats, but cannot seem to find any. Does anyone know of any or can refer me to info.? Also, would this position also have had service in the German Merchant Marine? I am trying to get a decent general background idea on such a rank.
