<HTML>The Germans were working on a number of sonar absorption coatings, one of which was known as Alberich and involved gluing textured rubber panels all over the boat\'s surface. I think the panels were known by the name Oppanol (brand name?)
Trials showed that while the coating did reduce the efficacy of the ASDIC echo sounder, this was negated to some extent by the noise produced when the panels became detatched while the boat was travelling at speed. The coating also knocked a knot or two off its submerged rate.</HTML>
