The airplane in this thread was a passenger carrying Douglas C-54. The aviation-safety.net text says the plane disintegrated and dropped in the jungle some 30 miles east of Paramaribo.

It seems most curious to me that a passenger carrying plane would fly so low and near a surfaced uboat (I repeat that to my information no uboat was present in the area on the day the aircraft was lost), that it would take so heavy damage from the uboat's Flak it would disintegrate and crash ... several miles inland.

Until proven otherwise, my viewpoint remains no uboat was involved in the loss of the C-54 January 15, 1943.
