U-Boat Intrusion - Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

Nov 23 - For decades there has been anecdotal evidence that a U-Boat entered Portsmouth NH harbor, totally undetected. In the mid-seventies, a USN officer was told by a visiting German gentleman, that he was a U-Boat commander who entered Portsmouth Harbor to gather intelligence on the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The story was that the U-Boat entered the harbor submerged under a commercial freighter that was passing through the anti-submarine net. the visitor reported that for three days they sat on the bottom of the river, and at night snorkeled up and down the river, photographing the Portsmouth Shipyard, subs in dock, and defense facilities. They escaped the same way they entered. Local 'old-timers' have reported the same incidence, but without specifics or extant documentation. Has anyone ever heard of this? A small group of dedicated local historians are attempting to verify this info, and are also researching the possibility that at least two unidentified U-Boats lie in relatively shallow water off the southern Maine/NH coast. Do any of you have anything to contribute to this query?? Thx!! ~ Laurence
