Nov 2023 - Does anyone know of this incident? At 2048, the night of Sunday, July 26th, 1942, the Portsmouth (NH) HECP (Harbor Entrance Control Post) reported that an Army mine just inside buoy 2KR had detonated...'cause of explosion unknown'. However, Harrison Workman, skipper of an Army minefield boat, was dispatched to check out the site. He reported considerable 'debris and petrolium' on the surface. Later, a teen-age girl whose family lived adjacent to Ft. Stark, Newcastle, NH (at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor), reported seeing bodies unloaded on a pier at the fort, and being loaded into a truck and driven away. An Army guard later told her father those were bodies that floated up from an enemy submarine sunk the previous night. Shortly thereafter, an area off Little Boar's Head, Hampton NH, was cordoned off by the Navy, and a salvage vessel was on site for several weeks. No documentation of this event has yet been uncovered. There are no daily logs from USS Falcon (ASR-2), or any other Navy salvage vessel regarding such activity...however some of the Falcon's deck logs are missing from that period. On the other hand, the civilian salvage firm, Merritt, Chapman & Scott, out of NY, had an open salvage contract with the Navy during the entire war. Is it possible they were on site and salvaged or at least dove on that U-Boat? We don't know, but are hoping to reveal the 'truth'. In August 1944, that same area was buoyed off, and a penciled-in note on the Notice To Mariner's publication regarding that area says, "item is a submarine". Anyone know anything about this?
