U Boots Abzeichen Eiserne Kreuz Second Class

I recently obtained a relatives U Boot Personnel File and have started to work on it. Under the section for Medals etc it has a stamp indicating the award of
U-Boots-Kriegsabzeichen Eiserne Kreuz II Klasse.

Is the U Boot medal a separate award from the Iron Cross second class ? Was the U boot medal equivalent to an Iron Cross or automatically awarded at the same time ?

The file also indicates the award of Eiserne Kreuz I Kalsse at a later date.

Any information or guidance would be really appreciated.
