Oil or Kerosene Lanterns

Does anyone know if either WWI or WWII u boats had oil or kerosene lanterns on board? Particularly ones with red lenses. I have heard that lanterns were used on early u boat conning towers as signaling devices and/or lighting. Looking to get confirmation or to dispel the myth. Any input would be appreciated.
