<HTML>I\'m looking for anyone familiar with the sinking of USS Cythera (PY-26) by U-402 (von Forstner) on May 2, 1942, east of Cape Fear, North Carolina. Cythera was the first US Navy warship sunk by a U-Boat in the Atlantic Frontier after the declaration of war between the U.S. and Germany, and the only known incident where an attacking U-Boat took U.S. Navy sailors (two survivors) onboard during Operation Pauchenschlag and transported them back to France as POWs.
(USS Jacob Jones was sunk by a U-Boat before the formal declaration of war off the coast of New Jersey).
U-402 was subsequently attacked and destroyed with all hands lost by aircraft from USS Card, west of the Azores, on October 13, 1943. I have much information on both incidents and am willing to share with interested parties.
Respectfully,
