It was a program to make U.S. desiel submarines perform better underwater. This is when they started to streamline submarines. They also added snorkels to the subs so they could run underwater. Most (though not all) had their deck guns and sometimes periscopes removed. Guppy subs could run to 16 knots underwater.

Fifty-two submarines were converted. But when nuclear submarines came along the Guppy\'s went out of service.
