It is based on the last mission of U-234 (a type X boat) skippered by Johann-Heinrich Fehler (he of "Atlantis" fame).
I didn't see the movie but I know the story from "Dynamite for hire" the Captain's biography by Sellwood (http://www.sonic.net/~books/sub.html)
The other reference book is
The uranium was intended as a catalist for syntetic fuel not for bombs. Another interesting character on board was R. Bulla, the IWO who was at the same time Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine Officer /test pilot, also of "Atlantis" fame.
