"The Eemy below" was a turning point in the history of American cinema since it was the first movie that "reabilitated" the German U-boat Commanders. When it was shot, the cold war was on full gear and (West) Germany was just secretely re-allowed to set up some Arme Forces (with an U-boat Arm). Its aim was to show German sailor were not as cruel and bad as previously pictured by the war propaganda.
I liked it along with all its ingenuties: especially the song singing during the final chase.
"Da Boot" has been done thirty years after, with huge resouces, by the German themselves and with the same aim.
One joke: when Das Boot got the Oscar Prize for its "Special effects" the Director commented: "Special effects? What special effects? It was all rea!"
