Das boot (the book)

<HTML>Hi, I have a question (certainly a stupide one) about the realy good book das boot from Lothar-Günther Buchheim: Why the name of the u-boat is "U-A"? I understain "U" but every u-boot name i know end by a number (like U-1, U-2,...) I'm sorry for this question, somebody will certainly said "Hey stupide guy, the reponse is........". Thank you for your patience and congratulation to the author(s?) of this pretty good and serious site.
