maybe the Author only knews the proper answer. I can just speculate that, having discussed a somehow sensitive matter, he did not want to be questioned about details. This often happens when an historical novel is written.
The movie itself, that has been acclamated as the best ever submarine movie, was criticized by some high ranking veterans.
