Buying the TV Series version of DB

I would like some advice in buying the TV series version of "Das Boot". It tapers out at 300+ minutes as opposed to the director's cut which i think is at 200 minutes. The remaining part that is not on this version, well, is there a significant difference that is worth having. Presumably the original is not digitized sound quality-wise, considering it was from the early eighties. I am thinking of buying it from amazon.de. I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks
