That picture had the dobious honour to finish on the black list during the post-war witch hunt, supposely because it remembered the Russians were deemed as good guys (see the closing shots) and were actively helped to crush the Krauts.
I saw the film and consider the U-boat sinking quite un-realistic: her skipper sems a WW1 veteran that makes a lot of tactical mistakes. Anyway there is something true in the plot itself: during the first war years a Merchant Marine crew had a good 50% chance to go into the drink and the North Atlantic is a pretty cold one.
