The u-boat pictured in "ASSAULT ON A QUEN" is probably a Type VIIC as shown on pages 138 & 139 in "THE U-BOAT" by Eberhard Rossler. There's one problem,
though, they forgot to mount a deck gun foward of the conning tower.
While the "clowns" are doing their first "sea trial" in their work shed, Sinatra and
his German accomplice submerge the boat alongside the pier and forgot to slack
the mooring lines. (maybe they used "bungee-cord" instead of manila for them:.
You've just got to give Hollywood credit, though, when they submerged the boat
with only a crew of two men. The Germans could've saved a lot of manpowewr if they sent only 2 guys like Sinatra and his buddy out on patrols.
Did you see Richard Conte setting up the boat's propulsion batteries? The German Navy again could've save a lot of materials if they installed those automobile-type batteries in their boats.
When Sinatra is working around the escape trunk hatch, he's clearing away rocks
on top of the hatch. How did they get there? (Davy Jones must be the culprit).
When he clears the rocks, he uses his prybar to rotate the undogging wheel on the
hatch. He rotates the wheel about one tenth of a turn and Voila! The hatch opens.
(The Germans had just greased the hatch's hinge-pins before the the crew abandoned the boat). But, when he opens the lower hatch in the escape trunk, he turns the wheel several turns to gain access to the boat's interior.
Sinatra's German accomplice states that there is 25,000 psi pressure on that escape trunk hatch, and Sinatra is using scuba gear. WOW!
I could go on and on , but what the heck, it's only an "entertaining flick", not a documentary.
I still say "ASSAULT ON A QUEEN" is still the worst sub flick made..........
