<HTML>Hallo Volker,
Yes, Prins Claus' demise is indeed a sad thing. His significance for the Dutch royalty and the Dutch coming to terms with Germany after the war is invaluable.
I was (and still am) a republican at heart. Modern society, I always thought, has no place for an outdated institution like royalty. However, Prins Claus took royalty to a new era, by his underlining of the fact that the royals are mere humans who stand in the middle of society, not above or outside it. His continuous efforts to give the royals a normal face have, in fact, converted me back to a royalist. I'd much rather have a head of state that acts independantly of politics, that radiates stability, than -may fate spare us- a neo-ultra-rightwinger like the late Mr. Fortuyn for a president.
As a bonus, Prins Claus undid, by being himself, a lot of silly clichés about Germans that were very much alive in the Netherlands after the war. Alas, not every Dutchman is free of hating Germans just because they are Germans, but I console myself by reminding myself that every country has a certain amount of hard-headed fools, who'll never learn, no matter what. As long as they don't get a chance to poison the rest of us (like they did in pre-war Germany or currently attempt to do in the Netherlands), we're fine.
Add to his contributions the last decades of his life, battling disease and depression and one can only mourn the demise of this brave and intelligent person.
Without wanting to brag, I'd say my German is fair (same level as my English), so I'll certainly read your post in 'Deutsche Sprache'. I'll answer only if I feel I have something to add, though. As stated in a post above this one, I only meddle in history, out of interest, and usually can only applaud the vast knowledge and wisdom of a lot of posters here.
regards,
