<HTML>Hi Hubertus

The film is by the underrated German director Douglas Sirk (originally Detlef Sierck), and is called "Time to Love and a Time to Die". Can't remember who was in it. It was based on a novel by Erich Maria Remarque, author of All Quiet on the Western Front.

I seem to remember the Eastern Front footage was pretty hard hitting for the time, but the rest of the film was a bit let down by the rather slushy romantic love story. It was a pretty good film though. I'm not surprised it stayed with you. Considering it was could only have been made a dozen or so years after the war it is a refreshingly human and sympathetic treatment of the German war experience for Hollywood. Whether you'd find a copy on video I don't know.

Try IMDb and put the title or name of the director in and it might tell you.
