<HTML>The German "destroyer" in U-571 was not a model but decommissioned U.S. Navy ASR. ASR stands for "auxiliary submarine rescue" or as we submariners dubbed "@#$%& and submarine rejects". There was always one at our base in Key West.
An interesting fact about the ASR's was they had the capability of rescuing crewmen from a sunken submarine up to about a maximum of 600 feet. Navy subs were not allowed to dive unless the depth of the water was at least (you guessed it) 600 feet. Lots of reassurance these things gave us! The ASR's had a lot of Navy diver's on them and this takes nothing away from these brave men, it's the Navy's odd policies that were ridiculous.</HTML>
