This is an introduction to CAPT Han-Joachim Krug's article:
"The author had to balance realism against dramatic license while serving as the
Naval technical adviser for the Oscar-nominated German film."
At the end of the this 6-page article, the following brief "resume" about the article's
author appears:
"Captain Krug entered the German Navy in the fall of 1938 and was commissioned
in 1941. He served in escort destroyers and submarines, and made submarine war patrols as executive officer in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean on the destroyer
escort LEOPARD and the U-219. Taken prisoner by the British at the end of the war at German Submarine Base in Jakarta, he later began a new career as film
cameraman, and in 1956, joined the German Navy as a lieutenant commander, served as executive officer on the D-179 (ex-USS DYSON (DD-572), and commanded the D-172 (ex-USS WADSWORTH (DD-516). He was stationed in Washington, DC from 1961 to 1964, later served as a naval attache at the German
Embassy in Tokyo, Japan, and retired in 1978 as head of the German Navy's
Intelligence Evaluation Branch. His decorations includee the Iron Cross (2nd Class),
the Submarine War Medal, and the Submarine Front Badge. Of note, the DYSON was part of Arleigh Burke's DesRon-23 at the Battle of Cape St. George; the WADSWORTH hit and probably sank the Japanese subbmarine I-20 and later survived two Kamikaze attacks at Okinawa."
This is not an interview........
I rate this article very highly, and highly recommend it to anyonee interested in the
filming of DAS BOOT. I've never seen the the director's comment on the DC.
If you have difficulty in obtaining it frrom the Naval Institute Press, let me know and I will copy the article and "snail-mail" it to you, OK?
Respectfully,
