<HTML>Dear ROBERT M,
I agree and it is my considered opinion that "The Enemy Below" was a turning point in the history of American cinema since it was the first movie that "rehabilitated" the German U-boat Commanders. When it was shot, the cold war was on full gear and (West) Germany was just secretly re-allowed to set up some Armed Forces (with an U-boat Arm). Its aim was to show German U-boat sailor were not as cruel and bad as previously pictured by the war propaganda.
I liked it along with all its ingenuity: especially the song singing during the final chase.
I pity they did not hire a real U-boat for filming: in those times both the Norvegian and the Spanish Navies had some still seaworthy. Or, why the hell they did not use the U 505 for the inside shots?
Greetings
