<HTML>The movie is set off the coast of Australia (Sydney). So that narrows it down to Japanese or American (mostly). In the background of the "sub" scenes, you can see dials and gauges in English. There is also an "exterior" shot which shows a letter/number combination on the hull, also in English. I guess that means it's an American sub. I wonder why Pixar chose an American sub? Incidentally, the sub is in a mine field, which may explain how it got there. It's a great movie, enjoy!!</HTML>
