not quite in the same league as Das Boot (a smaller budget for a start, though it's influence can be seen in the crabs reference and electronic musical score i think), but certainly superior to U-571 in terms of characterisation, plot, dialogue and attention to technical and historical accuracy. It has a couple of gripping if unconventional aerial engagement sequences that show the u-boats continual vulnerability to this mode of attack. Raises interesting questions as to what the outcome might have been with similar innovative methods of repulse and better intelligence.
