Realism Question: Movie U571

<HTML>In the fictional movie U571 there is a scene where two submerged WWII U-boats are firing torpedoes at each other while totally submerged. I assume this is not realistic because weren't torpedoes fired only after the Uboat had a visual sighting at the surface? If fully submerged they would be not be able to direct the torpedoes, I assume. Is this a Hollywood fantasy as I suspect?</HTML>
