coffee on U-boats

I was watching Das Boot (director's cut) again.
In one scene the officers are eating their modest meal, and the steward adds some coffee (? dark steaming liquid) to the Commander's cup.
The 2 second presumption is that this was coffee.
But Germany was under blockade and coffee doesn't grow in Europe (even in the med?), right?
So was it real coffee, or a substitute?
If it was coffee, where did the Germans get coffee? Pre-war stockpiles? Smuggled from Spain? Grown in the Italy?
Regards,
Kurt
