Firstly, as Io stated correctly, most of the Navymen were not political whatsoever. A good example is the homecoming of Teddy Suhren, when he approached the pier in France he shouted to all the waitung spectators ,among them superior officers "Are the Nazis still in power?" then ordered full speed aft for a few seconds.
The crew in DAS BOOT are true professionals ,they do an excellent job in bringing the boat home. Discipline was strict, it had to be, there was no discussion of orders etc. The only casual difference from surfaceunits was the wearing of civilian checkered shirts, as you can see on many pictures and the unshaven appearance, which is only natural taking into account the lack of fresh water.
The UBoatmen were the elite of the German Navy although there where some pretty good ones elsewhere, Schnellboote and Torpedoboote f.e. In my opinion the movie is pretty accurate. Exceptions are f.e. the stupid dance scene with an undressed sailors wearing oranges or bananas. Simply out of reality.
Well, this is my personal account after having known the German Navy as a professional Officer for 34 years.
