I can't help you with the novel, but it seems to me that being an idealistic, young, patriotic German and supporting the Nazi regime in 1941, particularly when he has lived in Mexico for an undisclosed period of time could be understood. Not condoned, knowing what we know now, but understood. All he would have known was what he was told and what he has heard. How many people would have known what was REALLY going on at the time? Particularly someone who was out-of-country. Although, I have to wonder what he would have been exposed to in all of his Kriegsmarine schooling...
