Did I say that? OK. It's a fairly neutral remark, actually, not necessarily a criticism of the I WO (although he certainly wasn't my favorite character), just a mild commentary. His concern over looking "just so" on a U-boat where no-one but his fellow crew-members could see him and where the rest of the group was quite relaxed about their appearance AND where there was only one bathroom, seems excessive to me--and to just about everyone else, it seems. When there's only one lavatory among 50 men, hogging it for the purposes of shaving is selfish and irritating.
That's all! Having just delivered a fairly long Referat over U-Boats in my German history class today, I couldn't possibly take sides in any political battle having to do with U-Bootmänner.
